“Cartoonish characters”
“Unbelievable storyline”
“[Insert other comment that has no merit]”
We are real people, we don’t get paid to watch TV (but if we did…) and we have a real opinion for you: Newsroom is fun to watch!
If we wanted to watch a show that was believable with characters that didn’t display any emotion we would watch…well…the ACTUAL news.
Aaron Sorkin provides us with a primetime news drama that stands lead anchor Will McAvoy and his staff (led by Executive Producer MacKenzie McHale) up against the norms of the news.
No spin here, if it won’t educate you in the voting booth or display all sides of the coin (yes, there are more than two sides… but you have to watch The Newsroom to know that), then they aren’t running with the story!
Mr. McAvoy is a man pushed to his extremes, all emanating from his tirade on a college campus when he spits straight fire upon a sorority girl (after being poked and prodded by the host of the panel) about how America isn’t the greatest country in the world, but it could be.
Self-righteous to the critics, we would argue that The Newsroom staff is just sick of cookie-cutter news and wants the truth to set A’mericuh free.
We can get behind that. Newsroom is a cry for integrity in a money-driven, ratings-influenced, and way-too-partisan news media landscape.
Oh yeah, there are plenty of office hook-ups, he-likes-me-he-likes-me-not, I-hate/love-my-boss drama sprinkled in there to make it all gel together in what is must-watch TV show in our books.
Hey, it’ll help the summer pass along nicely until…
WINTER IS COMING.
Ladies First:
“Yes, I am absolutely going to pull the ‘girl’ card on this one and say that I love the relationships on the show. Maybe it’s just me, but I find the women on the show absolutely relatable. No, I did not cheat on my boyfriend, nor am I considered a meek assistant, but the women are real. They go to work each day, work their butts off, prioritize what’s important (the people around them), look cute and frazzled at the same time, and still manage to have a dating life.”
Gentleman’s Disclosure:
”Without throwing in anything that could be considered a spoiler, I’m just going to say this: the latest episode has a Rudy tie in that will make you tear up. What’s better than that?! Will McAvoy, his superiors, and his EP have become straight up gangsters in the most recent episodes. I can’t wait to see where the show goes from here. Did I mention Olivia Munn is in it? Yeah, run to a TV, NOW!!!”
