Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey could have asked fans for gifts on his 48th birthday, but as a creative director for the Wild Turkey Bourbon distillery, he made a strategic business move instead. In a play-on-words, McConaughey gifted 4,500 residents in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky with free, frozen Butterball turkeys on Saturday, November 4th, according to video posted to McConaughey’s Facebook.

“We believe in our family that the more you’re thankful for, the more that you show gratification for, the more you’re going to create in your life to be thankful for,” McConaughey said in the video. “I think it’s kind of scientific.”

McConaughey states that about 250 volunteers joined McConaughey on this initiative. The actor ensured all residents received a turkey, leaving notes for those who didn’t answer their door, which read, “Sorry we missed you – Wild Turkey and Matthew McConaughey want to thank the fine residents of Lawrenceburg for their ongoing support by giving each family a Butterball Turkey!”

Residents who did not receive a turkey could pick one up at the Open Hands Pantry, which also received any of the undelivered turkeys.

The actor posted another Facebook Live video of his delivery, in which he walked up to the stairs of a house and several ladies screamed when they opened the door and saw him. McConaughey took a picture with the group, who called themselves the “Hot Mamas.”

Using the hashtag #wildturkeygivesback, McConaughey posed for pictures with various Lawrenceburg residents and the turkeys he was donating. These turkeys came with cards that said, “Thank you, Lawrenceburg! From your neighbors at Wild Turkey.”

The video of him delivering the turkeys was shared by 6,987 people and received 5,402 comments, although some of these users criticized McConaughey for giving turkeys to people who, in their opinion, didn’t need them.

“They don’t look like they NEED a turkey or anything from the looks of it!! I thought he was going to REAL FAMILIES IN NEED,” one Facebook user wrote.

However, others appreciated his thoughtfulness.

“We got one and would have never gotten one otherwise because of cost. We thank everyone involved for the turkey it means a lot,” another Facebook user commented.

Although this act of kindness drew attention to the Wild Turkey Bourbon distillery, McConaughey’s consideration toward others on his birthday serves as an inspirational act of generosity, something that is always needed in this world.
