Did you ever wish you could just shop through Alicia Silverstone’s closet in Clueless? Or have Heath Ledger swoon over you in 10 Things I Hate About You? I know I sure did. The ‘90s was a magical time full of boy bands, scrunchies, Friends, Lisa Frank and countless other memories. Even though parachute pants were somehow a thing, the ‘90s was also a time for fashion trends that managed to stick around. A trend that we see recurring every so often on the runway is back in action this season.
Clueless has inspired fashion in a variety of ways. Young women can don the look by wearing knee high socks, tartan skirts, schoolgirl plaid, twin sets, platform shoes and choker necklaces. All these pieces can be worn together or separately to create a look that is flirty, fun and that will definitely have all the boys drooling. Honestly, what guy doesn’t fantasize about schoolgirls in short plaid skirts?
If you are not into the Barbie-esque ensembles, try a ‘90s minimalistic look. A “barely there” slip dress is simple and feminine without all the hassle. Slip dresses like this were all the rage in the ‘90s, with their low necklines, simple cut silhouettes and thin spaghetti straps. Accompany the dress with a pair of chunky shoes and even a sheer overlay. If you are feeling really daring try and find some of those fun butterfly clips that every girl had in a variety of colors!
Another look to try for a more youthful mood is a lightweight, flowy floral dress. Choose a simple floral patterned dress with a full skirt that hits above the knee. Layer the dress with either a grungy flannel or a sweater tied around the waist. For shoes choose a pair that is more edgier than feminine like a pair of combat boots or tennis shoes with socks.
I have photographed three looks that represent a modern take on ‘90s fashion. In the first look I have paired a yellow blouse with a yellow cardigan (Forever 21), with a slim fit denim pencil skirt (River Island) and heels. For the second look a simple slip dress, chunky heels (Kohl’s) and a choker necklace. The last look is a floral dress (Forever 21), white sweater (Atmosphere) and a pair of tan combat boots (Collection). All three outfits are attainable at a low price and I am sure you have some similar pieces in your wardrobe.
For hair and makeup you should go for a fun, youthful, refreshing look. Focus on neutral colors and a fun lip-gloss that smells and tastes divine. For your hair try a twisted, messy bun or even some playful pigtails. All together these ‘90s looks are perfect to spice up your life on the weekend or when you are hanging out with friends!
