Chris Paul, point guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder, has shown support regarding various social justice issues. He has used his platform and power to spread awareness of the persisting events that illustrate inequality.
Recently, Paul and fellow players introduced The Social Change Fund, which aims to support the black community. The main goals are ending police brutality and advocating for Black lives.T he organization collaborates with smaller organizations to focus on social reform and justice issues. Additionally, goals include increasing voting accessibility, increasing representations of black leadership, and creating more opportunities for people of color in areas of education, employment, and housing.
In the past, Chris Paul has impacted local communities substantially. In fact, he earned the NBA Community Assist Award five times. Moreover,, he received the Mannie Jackson Human Spirit Award. Finally, he was awarded the 2016 ESPYS “Humanitarian of the year” award.
In an ABC News Exclusive, players discuss their plans for the upcoming season. Chris Paul says,
“There’s a lot of things that each one of us have done as individuals, but we see this as an opportunity not only for us to come together and make a bigger impact … just continue to try to make real, sustainable change,”
Paul is committed to using his platform to encourage important dialogue. Moreover, he has encouraged many players to swap their last names for messages supporting social justice. Chris Paul will be wearing a jersey saying “equality.” In addition, he introduced the trend of wearing jerseys with the names of police brutality victims.
The enduring protests and events involving police brutality have shown players to recognize the current global predicaments and be extremely vocal.
