Dua Lipa, British singer and songwriter, planned to release her album, Future Nostalgia, at the end of March in the midst of quarantine. She didn’t shy away from this time of troubling anxiety and social isolation. Many other celebs, such as Lady Gaga, decided to postpone the release of her album in large part due to our current state of affairs.
Future Nostalgia is full of pop-driven, upbeat songs with captivating energy that entices listeners to dance and feel emotionally positive, even given the difficult times. It is Lipa’s second studio album with Warner Records.
Lipa broke some major global records on Spotify with its release, becoming the most streamed album in a day by a British female artist globally, the most streamed album in a day by a British female artist in the UK, and the most streamed album in a day by a British female artist in the US.
Her Saturday Night live appearance and a world tour have now all been postponed due to the state of our nation’s affairs. Lipa seems to be making the best of it, working to advertise her new album from home. She showcased resilience and courage in releasing her album in a contested time, when many artists have backed away from their release dates.
The star seemed initially distressed in announcing her decision to release the album despite the COVID-19 crisis, in near tears. However, upon setting the new music free, she feels relaxed in that she did not have to decide on a perfect or revised release strategy.
All of the songs are pop-drenched, infused with the beats of funk and disco, making them high energy and exciting during a time where it seems like we are surrounded by negative energy and distress.
Lipa has a writing credit on every song of this album, so her personality soaks the lyrics and melodies. Future Nostalgia seems to showcase the star’s true self much more than any of her previous tracks and albums
Though her Future Nostalgia European 2020 Tour was set to begin in April in Madrid, the star has pushed it back to 2021 in order to preserve the safety of fans and comply with government regulations.
The album is full of empowering messages of love, relationships, and friendships, with Lipa being totally vulnerable and descriptive in her lyrics. “Don’t Start Now”, the first song released from the album in November 2019, captures the vibe of the rest of the album.
Her fans took to social media, namely Twitter, to share their overwhelming positive feedback with the star’s new music. The music has been called “the hottest record ever” and in addition to topping the charts overwhelmingly, it seems that her fanbase has decided it was an excellent idea for Lipa to release the album when she did, opposed to waiting.
Perhap her fans and the world needed this feel-good, dance-worthy, positive party music in this troubling time.
