From Dalgona to Mocha, Five Yummy Coffee Recipes to Motivate You

A cup of coffee can be a source of comfort and motivation, so here are some customizable caffeinated recipes you can try at home!

Chances are you’ve stumbled across some pretty aesthetic and mouth watering recipe videos during quarantine, especially the new trend of dalgona coffee. Luckily, this recipe, along with many others we will share today, are fun and easy to make! A cup of coffee can be a source of comfort and motivation, so here are some customizable caffeinated recipes you can try at home to bring the coffee shop to you.

1. Dalgona Coffee

A sweet treat and an arm workout all in one, dalgona coffee is the recent viral trend of disputed origins. One thing is for sure, though: This is definitely a trend you should try for yourself at home.

The only ingredients required are instant coffee powder, sugar, hot water, and milk. Simply whip equal parts instant coffee, sugar, and hot water until the mixture becomes creamy—please note, this is a lot of whipping. Then, pour the milk or milk substitute into a separate cup, add some ice cubes, and spoon the coffee mixture on top!

2. Mocha

This is a classic for chocolate and coffee lovers alike. Since most of us don’t have espresso machines at home, so here are some simpler ways to get that chocolatey coffee taste.

Grab your hot cocoa powder and combine it with instant coffee powder before mixing in your steamed milk. If you want to better control the amount of coffee, simply making a cup of hot cocoa and adding coffee later can produce similar results. Alternatively, if you’re feeling fancy and have more time to kill, try melting down milk, dark, or even white chocolate with a splash of hot water in a saucepan and combining that with instant coffee to create your sauce!

3. Masala Chai

For those who are not coffee drinkers, this tea and spice-based drink might be for you. While many tea and coffee companies offer their own version of “chai”, selling the tea concentrate in boxes for at-home use, it is best to try to make it from scratch.

There are many variations on this drink, but the basic ingredients are tea leaves, water, ginger, milk, and sugar, along with other spices such as peppercorn, cinnamon, and clove. Preparation also varies, but you can steep all other ingredients together first before mixing it with milk. It’s best to try multiple different variants on this drink before deciding what works best for you!

4. Coffee Frappe

A “frappe”, or frozen coffee, is as simple as it sounds. This can be the perfect cool-down for a hot day.

All you need is coffee, ice, and milk for the basic recipe. Just put everything in a blender and there you have it! Of course, it doesn’t just end there. You can customize the drink however you want—caramel sauce, a shot of vanilla, and don’t forget topping it off with whipped cream!

5. Caramel Apple Spice

Overshadowed by the hype of the pumpkin spice latte, this fall classic can be enjoyed at any time of the year.

Required ingredients are apple cider, caramel sauce, and a little cinnamon syrup shot. While your apple cider is heating up, pour a shot of cinnamon syrup at the bottom of a cup and line the insides with caramel sauce. Then, simply pour in the steamed cider, top with a little more caramel, and you’re ready to go! Whipped cream is optional but highly recommended.
