How to Science

Post saved!

In space, no one can hear you scream. However, on Mars, they can. The Martian is about NASA astronaut Mark Watney, who becomes stranded on Mars when he is struck during a storm and presumed dead by his crew who are forced to abort. When he wakes up, he finds himself alone on the red planet and, with the next manned mission to Mars years away, he has to figure out how to survive with 31 days of supplies.

This film is a perfect example of a book-to-screen adaptation done right. You’ll always have the people who evangelize how much better the book is, and others who don’t care about the book if they can just watch the movie. However, as long as the movie is awesome, who cares? As expected of Ridley Scott, no matter how fond of the book you are, you’ll want to catch these visuals.

Matt DamonFirst of all, the cast is absolutely stacked and the performances range from great to better. We get to see the toughest positions people can be in and the reality of handling them. We also get to see Sean Bean not get killed off for an entire movie. Matt Damon going through his time on Mars is spectacular to watch and the charisma oozes right out of the screen. Also look out for the weightwatchers Stranded on Mars diet coming soon because rationing your food is clearly great for getting rid of those hard to lose pounds.

If you’re looking to be inspired by the resilience of man, look no further. The Martian delivers on every front and it would be a shame to miss it in theaters. For more like it check out Gravity, Interstellar, and if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, 2001: A Space Odyssey. The Martian gets a 40 out of 45.
