In continuing New York Minute’s birthday bash, we returned to our interns to ask them what (outside of their internships, of course), makes them feel empowered. Check out their answers below, and let’s hope for another great eight years for NYMM!
Who or what makes you feel empowered? A person in your life? A feminist icon? Empowering media? Something else?
Hawyar Farooq (Web Development Intern): My mom is the perfect icon I look up to. She managed to get through all the social barriers back in my home country. I am so lucky to have her.
Rachel Feiner (Editorial Intern): Having opportunities to take charge and be a leader, in everyday life as well as the school organizations I’m involved with, helps me a lot. I grew up being known as the shy girl, but pushing myself to be more than that has helped me feel empowered and feel better overall.
Ridhima Jagtap (Social Media & Marketing Intern): My mum is my top feminist icon. She and my dad are the reason why I’m able to access amazing opportunities and I will be forever grateful. They both encourage me to be the best version of myself and to not hold back when it comes to chasing my goals. They are my number one cheerleaders.
Madison Casimir (Editorial Intern): My mom is the number one badass in my life. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her constant love and support. But also, Carrie Fisher of Star Wars fame had a huge impact on my young, impressionable mind and her writings really helped me to grow into my full, unadulterated self.
