Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes somehow manage to raise their children, grow their successful careers, and look incredible all the time. Accomplishing all this requires a lot of hard work, time management skills, and, most importantly, teamwork. At the Golden Globes, Gosling showed us all that he takes that to heart with his shout out to Mendez, thanking her for her help in winning the award for best actor in a comedy or musical, for his role in La La Land.
During his speech, Gosling remarked, “I would just like to try and thank one person properly. While I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on a film, my lady (Mendes) was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer.”
Gosling added, “If she hadn’t taken all that on so that I could have this experience, there would surely be someone else up here other than me today.”
Sacrifices are necessary when dealing with the high demands of filming schedules in the midst of raising a family. In this case, Mendes was the one who sacrificed the time working on her own career in order to do an even more important job; raising her children. Gosling seems to be aware of this, as he takes the time to thank Mendes for all that she has done. In this acknowledgment, Gosling reminds us that raising a family is a team effort, one that requires sacrifices on both ends. Though Mendes stayed home this time, with this attitude it is clear that Gosling knows he’s up next.
This view of parenthood, and in this case motherhood, truly empowers the role of caretaker, which is often undervalued and under recognized. Gosling reminds us of the sacrifice many women make to take care of their children, and of just how important that is.
In fact, Gosling recently told ES Magazine, “I think women are better than men. They are stronger. More evolved. You can tell especially when you have daughters and you see their early stages, they are just leaps and bounds beyond boys immediately.”
Gosling has no problem telling everyone about how badass the women in his life are, which we think is pretty awesome.
