The age-old Taylor Swift/Kanye West drama is finally landing on some sort of resolve. Back in 2016, their feud, which began at the 2009 VMAs when Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech, reignited over the rap lyrics to West’s song “Famous”.
In “Famous”, Kanye raps, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / I made that b*tch famous.” Swift quickly released a response to the lyrics, saying that West did not call Swift for approval for the lyrics, but only asked her to release the song on her social media accounts.
Allegedly, Swift declined to do so and cautioned West against writing such a misogynistic song. She also claimed she was never made aware of the actual lyrics, and how degrading they truly are. Though Swift’s comments could have been the end of her involvement in the scenario, West’s wife Kim Kardashian did not hesitate to get involved.
In an interview with GQ Magazine, Kim Kardashian alleged that Taylor Swift knew about the lyrics prior to the release of the song, and permitted West’s use of her name. Kardashian claimed that West called to get the lyric approved and she “totally gave the okay”. Kardashian also insulted Swift, claiming she was “playing the victim”.
Later that year, West took it to the next level. His music video for the song featured an array of celebrities doctored into nudity in a bed with Kardashian and West. Next to West is a nude Swift. Kardashian wasn’t through with her involvement though, posting a clip of the phone call between Swift and West to her Snapchat.
In the phone call, Swift is at first concerned and then calls the lyric “like a compliment”, and thanks West for letting her know and respecting her. Kardashian put forth that she was hoping to protect her husband by releasing the call.
As a rebuttal, Swift claimed she was never made aware that she’d be called a “b*tch” in the song and hoped to be removed from the narrative, which had been ruling her life since 2009. Swift used the feud as a jumping-off point for her 2018 album Reputation, as Kardashian was one of the first to publicly call Swift a snake.
On March 20th, 2020, fans and followers of the drama finally found respite when a Youtube account leaked an unedited version of the 2016 call between West and Swift. In the call, West runs lyrics by Swift and does not ask for her approval over the line which calls her a “b*tch”. She does not say she is okay with the line in which West suggests he made Swift famous.
Fans of Swift and those who were on her side of the feud from the start were thrilled to find that Swift was telling the truth all along. Kardashian, however, took to Twitter to cast Swift in a poor light for the “last time”, claiming Swift decided to release this exchange during a terribly stressful time.
Despite how you’ve felt about the West Swift drama since the start, fans now have an answer to the confusion and hostility surrounding it.
