The Latest DIY Buzz: Charcoal Masks

Sticking with our DIY theme from last week, this week, we bring you activated charcoal masks! Follow along for a nice spa treatment right at home with a mask that is getting a lot of positive buzz.

Courtesy of Wellness Mama, we’ve found a charcoal mask DIY that is not only effective for baby-smooth skin and a general clearing detox, but that only requires three ingredients! Just be sure to wear an old t-shirt or something of the like–charcoal stains!

You’ll need: bentonite clay, activated charcoal powder, and raw honey. Essential oil can also be added, but this is optional. Upon first glance, you may have thought that bentonite clay and charcoal powder would be hard to find, but a quick Google search reveals that places as common as Wal-Mart and CVS carry these ingredients for all your DIY-mask needs!

To get started, add two teaspoons of water to a small bowl, and one drop of your essential oil if you plan on using it. Next, sprinkle one teaspoon of bentonite clay over the water and allow it to absorb for 10-20 seconds before moving to the next ingredients. This step allows the clay to become easier to mix.

Add one teaspoon of activated charcoal powder and half a teaspoon of raw honey. Mix thoroughly with a rubber spatula. This will take a few minutes, as the mixture is sure to be lumpy at first.

The final product should allow you to make two masks. If you’re thinking about saving the second mask for later, these ingredients unfortunately won’t preserve well when stored. Instead, you can enjoy your at-home spa with a friend!

Once your mask mixture is smooth enough, apply it evenly to your face. Allow it to dry for about 10 minutes before washing it off with warm water and soap. A washcloth will definitely help with the removal, as this mask tends to be a bit tougher to get off. Make sure to use a washcloth you don’t mind getting stained! Be sure to also immediately clean your sink, as it may get stained as well.

Voilà! You’ve just given yourself the coveted charcoal mask treatment. Charcoal is known to absorb toxins, and the mask will grant you clearer, softer skin as well. If the charcoal ends up being a drying agent for your skin type, just follow up with a thin layer of oil or lotion!

With this DIY, you too can partake in the latest beauty treatment sensation—now if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to add these ingredients to our grocery lists.
