Last Sunday during the Super Bowl, football player Tom Brady led the New England Patriots to victory once more with a stellar performance on the field. You don’t need to be a football fan, though, to appreciate the legend’s shoutout to one of his biggest fans: his mom.
Galynn Brady has been fighting cancer for the past year, which prevented her from attending any of her son’s games prior to the Super Bowl. The quarterback opened up about his mother’s struggle on WEEI’s Kirk and Callahan Show, saying, “She’s been through a lot, my dad’s been through a lot – it’s been a really hard year for them.”
Galynn had been a staple in the stands at every Patriots game prior to her illness. Though Tom must have missed her, he assured his interviewers, “I just wanted her to get her rest.”
This absence was not the case, though, for the Super Bowl; Galynn was able to attend the game and witness her son’s incredible performance. Robert Kraft, the owner of the Patriots, told NESN, “I spoke to [Brady] in the locker room before the game, and I said, ‘We gotta win this one for your mom,’ because I know how important his mom is. She’s been going through chemotherapy and radiation, and this is the first game she’s been to. She came here, and I just saw her, and it was really cool.”
After the Patriots’ incredible comeback in the fourth quarter, Brady dedicated the win to his mother. “She’s been though a lot. Way harder than what I went through last night,” he said at a press conference the day after the win. “My dad’s been there every step of the way. They set such a great example for me … I was just happy last night to be able to celebrate with her. And she hadn’t been to a game all year, so what a hell of a game for her to be at.”
Brady’s appreciation for all that his mother has done for him was clear in his emotional win.
